If you ever want to search for information on lost relatives or your family tree from sources like the census, Ancestry.com is a great spot to begin. It does, however, come with a price. You can, though, as a card-holding member of the New York Public Library, go to any one of their libraries and use their computers to look into the past for free.

Library version of Ancestry.com.
