Highbridge (Our Water Supply Bridge)
A great 19th-century image of the Harlem River’s Highbridge:
Note that there was no steel span in the middle. Originally the bridge was only held up by masonry piers. These were removed (in the middle) to make way for a large steel arch that permitted better river traffic to go up/down the river.
