The 3rd Avenue Bridge Unable to Close

“It would be a bad thing to curse the old Jew man out.”

Yesterday, the 3rd Avenue Bridge was opened to permit the passage of a ship up the river. When it came time to close the bridge, the heat had expanded the (steel) bridge so much, that it could no longer close.

As a result, the FDNY’s fireboats were called into service and sprayed river water on the bridge in order to cool it, and thereby shrink it.

Later, in the evening, the bridge was able to close.
