Cicely Tyson's Childhood Home

The actress Cicely Tyson, who died in January 2021, at the age of 96, spent several childhood years living in a 5th floor railroad flat in this five-story brick apartment building, erected in 1910. This historic building now holds 10 units of affordable housing and is owned by the affordable housing nonprofit Ascendant Neighborhood Development, a member of Landmark East Harlem. In 1994, after renovating the house, Ascendant named it in her honor.

Cicely Tyson land her family first lived at 311 E 102nd Street. Then, when her parents separated around the time she was nine, she moved with her mom, sister, and brother to 101st Street. She stayed there until she was seventeen, which was around the time she became pregnant and got married to her first husband.
