Looking Closely at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Statue on 125th Street
Statue of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. by sculptor Branly Cadet on 125th Street
His purposeful stride has inspired Harlem passers by for two decades, since the commanding statue was installed on the plaza at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr State Office Building. It was created by sculptor Branly Cadet (who has gone on to memorialize many other famous Americans in metal).
On the westerly side of the statue are plaques that read “Keep the Faith,” Powell’s famous mantra. But look closely at those plaques and you will see that they include all of the legislation introduced in Congress by Powell, New York’s first Black Congressional representative. They include the equal rights amendment mandating equal pay across genders, and legislation to outlaw housing discrimination.
A close-up reveals the legislation introduced in the U.S. Congress by Adam Clayton Powell Jr.
Next time you pass by take a moment to stop and perhaps learn a bit more about what the groundbreaking Harlem statesman accomplished on the Hill.
