The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute Launches the Community Archiving Lab for Culture and Justice

Not only is it the 100th anniversary of Harlem’s Schomburg Center, but Harlem has cause for even more celebration as the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary and launches a dynamic new forum to reflect on its place in history.

Located in a renovated firehouse at 120 East 125th Street, CCCADI is an arts, culture, education and media organization that advances cultural equity, racial and social justice for African descendant communities. On May 22nd as it approaches its 50th anniversary, it is launching the Community Archiving Lab for Culture and Justice to deepen that connection, and invite reflection on their history and evolution as an organization.

Beginning May 22nd, step into the CCCADI Firehouse and witness the real-time uncovering of archival treasures — letters, recordings, images and stories that hold the pulse of their legacy. As Dr. Margarita Lila Rosa, Resident Archivist says, “The uncovered CCCADI Archive has been holding an extraordinary amount of Afro-Latin American and African American documents from Brazil, Peru, Cuba, Nigeria, everywhere! It’s our privilege to dust off those pages and realize that we’ve been here— speaking, sentient, revolutionary beings, all along.”

Find out more information and rsvp for the launch event on May 22nd from 3-9pm here.
