Cocked Streescape and Great Barn Island
+ Introducing Harlem Youth Construct
Note how this map of the layout of Dutch Nieuwe Haarlem shows that under the Dutch, streets were laid out north/south and east/west based on the compass.
Today New Yorkers in Manhattan live under a cocked version of this as the Commissioners Map laid out the city following the general orientation of the island, and not following the compass.
Also, note that Wards Island was once called Great Barn Island as sea grass was harvested and dried/stored there for feeding livestock in the Dutch colonial era.
Introducing Harlem Youth Construct
Youth Construct, is a Harlem based non-profit organization that provides construction administration training and subsequent summer internships to motivated 11th and 12th graders from under-served communities. It is a non-profit arm of Bottomline Construction Development, a Harlem-based minority woman-owned real estate construction and development firm founded by Alexis McSween, which completed projects such as Victoria Theatre and La Marqueta.
In the 8 months training program, students will attend two after-school classes each week. At the end of the 8 month training, students will be hired into paid 3 month summer internships with established companies in the construction field.
What does the program provide for our youth?
A broad introduction into the architecture, construction, engineering, and real estate development sectors (ACED)
Training on topics such as bidding analysis, accounting, estimation, blueprint reading, inspection and software usage, helping students to embark on various construction administrative careers, such as Construction Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager, Project Associate, Expediter and Construction Office Manager
Valuable networking opportunities with real estate professionals in New York City
An alternate path to enter the construction business for those not drawn towards the skilled labor trade
Transferable skills such as project management, marketing, profit projection, and office etiquette. In addition, graduates will be equipped with transferable Notary Public license and OSHA 30 certification
More information can be found at. www.youthconstruct.org.
We would appreciate the opportunity to meet and go over the details of the program with you and discuss possible ways to collaborate. Let me know of a good time and if you have further questions.
