Harlem’s African Burial Ground

The NYCEDC and the Harlem African Burial Ground Initiative have commenced the next phase of archaeological work at the Harlem African Burial Ground, located at the decommissioned 126th Street Bus Depot in East Harlem. This phase involves the recovery of human remains and the production of a final Technical Report by 2025. The project aims to honor and memorialize the contributions of African descendants to Harlem’s history.

AKRF Inc. has been selected to lead the archaeological recovery, ensuring the safe and dignified handling of the remains. Armand Corporation, a black and woman-owned construction management firm, will oversee site operations, while Bridge Philanthropic Consulting will spearhead an education and engagement campaign to raise awareness both locally and nationally.

NYCEDC President Andrew Kimball emphasized the importance of restoring and honoring the memory of those buried at the site. He highlighted the collaborative efforts with AKRF, Armand, and Bridge Philanthropic Consulting to ensure the Harlem African Burial Ground receives the recognition and development it deserves.

Leaders from the Harlem African Burial Ground Initiative expressed pride in their advocacy and collaboration with various partners. They underscored the significance of the project for historic preservation, community-building, and education. The initiative also aims to address community needs such as affordable housing and job creation, making it a vital project for East Harlem.
