East Harlem Hoops
+ Diversity Data for East Harlem
Patch.com reported on East Harlem Hoops, a basketball program hosted by the Salvation Army's Manhattan Citadel Corps (in the same building where HNBA regularly meets).
East Harlem Hoops has now provided a space for neighborhood basketball for over 15 years. Started in 2009, the league, with about 2,000 participants over the years, meets twice weekly at 175 East 125th St. Teams of diverse backgrounds and ages gather for games, showing dedication and professionalism.
Pastor Alvaro Velasquez, overseeing the program for the past year, praises the impact it has on participants' lives. The league's popularity influences the church's schedule, with Tuesdays and Thursdays dedicated to games. Started by Pastor Stephen Mayes, the program initially had four teams and has since grown to 12, with community support and occasional assistance from local figures like Dominique Jones. Participants often engage in volunteer work with the Salvation Army, demonstrating a sense of ownership and care for the facility.
Velasquez encourages anyone interested to attend games on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.
