“For The Ancestors That Never Were,” Laura Gadson, fabric, 2023
During Women’s History Month, See the Work of a Spectacular Harlem Quilt Artist at City College
Truth, Tales & Fabrications: The Quilt Art of Laura R. Gadson is on display at City College’s Aaron Davis Hall/City College Center for the Arts, Mon-Fri 11:00am – 6:00 pm and select Saturdays at 129 Convent Avenue through June 27, 2025
In this solo art show, City College presents stunning quilts created by Laura Gadson (whose work is part of museum collections including the Smithsonian’s) between 2004 and now, many of which speak to the Black American Experience & Aesthetic.
A longtime Harlem resident and artist with a gallery in her brownstone, Gadson explores and blends the worlds of quilting, felting, painting, collage and more, as a result of her love affair with textiles and paper and a variety of materials. The intricate quilts tell stories of the Black diaspora, capture intimate moments, and are certain to evoke a range of feelings in visitors.
On March 15, Gadson gave a fascinating lecture about the history of quilting and activism and visitors were invited to create a square for a quilt Gadson is planning on Women and Activism.
Truth, Tales & Fabrications is a homecoming of sorts: Gadson graduated from the renowned Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music & Art on the City College Campus and she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from City College.
Her brownstone on West 134th street has been her home, studio and personal show place since 1993. Visitors are welcomed by event or appointment.
Gadson will be in attendance at the exhibition on some upcoming Saturdays! Please check The Gadson Gallery website here for details. (KD/ER)
