Floodnet Sensor In Harlem

+ As Seen In Harlem

FloodNet is a network of sensors across NYC that reports on flooding conditions in vulnerable neighborhoods. The sensor (shown below) is located at ACP/126:

The flooding data is then linked to researchers and New York City government agencies who are all working to better understand the frequency, severity, and impacts of flooding in New York City. The data and knowledge gained can be used by Harlem residents, researchers, city agencies, and others to advocate around and work to reduce flood risk. FloodNet is helping to first identify street flooding and then neighborhoods that are vulnerable to high tides, storm surge, and stormwater runoff.

The real-time flood sensors were developed by the FloodSense project at NYU and the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), with a goal of providing information on the presence, frequency, and depth of hyperlocal street-level flood events to a range of stakeholders, including policymakers, government agencies, citizens, emergency response teams, community advocacy groups, and researchers.
