+ Hell Gate Bridge Nearing Completion

Take a walk.  Join a movement.

This powerful invitation is a central mantra to Girltrek, a social justice organization that follows in the footsteps of the civil rights movement by activating thousands of Black women to be change-makers in their lives and communities — through walking.

Girltrek's unique synthesis of walking, history, storytelling, and uplift was highlighted on NPR:

GirlTrek
\gûrl-ˈtrek\
  • (v.) To lace up our sneakers and walk each day as a declaration of self-care!

  • (v.) To heal our bodies, inspire our daughters, and reclaim the streets of our neighborhoods.

  • (v.) To reestablish walking as a healing tradition in Black communities as tribute to those who walked before us.

  • (n.) A health movement organized by volunteers across America to inspire one million by 2020.

There is a Brooklyn chapter, but I don't see one in Harlem.  Let HNBA know if you decide to step up and become a team leader:

There are still cranes on the two supporting towers, but the work is practically finished. The photo is from 1916:
