1950’s Manhattan Gangs
David J. Van Pelt is clearly obsessed with 1950’s youth gangs in New York. And while his main focus is on Brooklyn (and led to his book: Brooklyn Rumble: A Dive into 1950s Gang Wars and the End of an Era), his many years of research and writing has led to a fascinating database of 1950’s gangs that he describes as:
Like West Side Story, but grittier.
Van Pelt asks readers to forget the romanticized portrayals of gangs in movies and instead look at the harsh realities of these turf wars. Van Pelt argues that these turf wars weren't fights over drugs; they were battles for pride, territory, and respect. The book paints a vivid picture of a bygone era, where patches of land held immense significance and gang loyalty ran deep.
Pelt invites readers to reach out with questions, comments, or even personal experiences related to NYC gangs of the 1950s.
