+ Dapper Dan
The photo of 125th Street in 1964 shows Harlem Lanes on 125th Street. The Harlem Opera House stood on this block but was then knocked down in the 1960s and turned into a bowling alley.
The building that replaced the bowling establishment (and a few of the other businesses shown in the historic photo), now houses the offices of Community Board 10.
Dapper Dan
In addition to outfitting style makers of the 80's, 90's and beyond, Harlem’s fashion superstar, Dapper Dan, saw his work adorn the key players in 1980’s Hip Hop:
Dapper Dan also sold to major athletes. 19-year-old Mike Tyson's attempt to pick up a jacket in 1988:
(at 4 AM after having rolled up to Dapper Dan's Boutique in his white Rolls Royce), was thwarted when Mitch Green (a boxing rival) appeared. A fight broke out on East 125th Street, and in this news footage, both sides and an employee, offer their insight:
