Dear Elsie,

Was pleased to learn that your Grandma is in good health & will be glad to welcome you both back to Harlem. My health is much improved.

Formerly Known as Muscoota

Before the Dutch named our community 'Nieuw Haarlem' which was eventually shortened to simply 'Harlem', the Lenape People who lived on Manahatta, called our part of the island 'Muscoota'. Reports sent back by early Dutch colonists to encourage further Dutch settlers described in glowing terms the flora, fauna, soils, and climate of Harlem.
