Hudson Yards Exploited Harlem

+ Augusta Savage's Harlem Community Art Center

In what almost seems like a conspiracy theorist’s fever dream, the fact that Hudson Yards was partly financed by Chinese investors is still mind boggling. These Chinese (and other non-US citizens) were able to obtain US visas after putting up $500,000+ in development investment.  This was possible because Hudson Yards was “linked” to Harlem NYCHA housing projects in the jaw dropping gerrymandered map below.

This crazy map justified the investment/visa program by claiming that the investment would (somehow) benefit NYCHA residents.

The investor visa program that somehow linked NYCHA with Hudson Yards is the EB-5 Visa Program:

The (above) map was made using records obtained through FOIA, shows Hudson Yards qualifies as a distressed urban area under the EB-5 program, namely by linking the luxury development to public housing projects in Harlem. (Mark Byrnes/CityLab)

Famed sculptor Augusta Savage opened the Harlem Community Art Center at 290 Lenox Avenue in 1938 as part of the WPA initiatives. The opening was attended by then first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. This photo is from the website Revolution’s Newsstand.
