Mayday and Randall's Island

+ Five4Five Film Festival

In 1886, American labor unions chose May 1 as the starting day for a strike in favor of an 8-hour work day. From then on, it was a day to rally for workers’ rights and reformist causes.

In the 1930’s some of the day’s festivities were sponsored by local unions and were held on Randall’s Island.

Randall's Island offered a spacious venue for these May Day gatherings, accommodating diverse activities like parades, speeches, cultural performances, and even sporting events. The island's location, easily accessible by ferry and public transportation, further contributed to its popularity as a May Day celebration site.
