NYPD Helicopters

Bloomberg has a fascinating story on how the NYPD spends (wastes) money on helicopter flights.

On the map below, you can see that they fly police helicopters unevenly in the city. Note that the Harlem River is a major thoroughfare and Yankee Stadium is a significant destination.

Compare the 2023 data on Manhattan neighborhoods - Harlem and East Harlem with East New York. Harlem and East Harlem and Midtown. The focus on the Statue of Liberty. and the Brooklyn Bridge (as well as the aforementioned Yankee Stadium) indicate that many flights may have been for recreation.

Interestingly, I would have said that our community got a lot of police helicopter flights. Not so according to the data. 59th and 5th (the Apple Store) got much more flight time than anything near our neighborhood, other than the Harlem River itself:
