Original Street Car

+ East Harlem's BID

Before Metro North, the New York & Harlem Railway ran along 4th Avenue (Park Avenue) between the city and Harlem.

The street cars that made this run looked like the one pictured below from 1831 and were pulled by horses:

The New York & Harlem Railway was the world’s 1st Street Railway (carriages on tracks pulled by horses) and was designed by John Stephenson (his name in on the drawing).

The image (for sale on Ebay) was from the portfolio of magic lantern images that would have been used by a Railroad/Trolley Car salesman in the early 1900s.

East Harlem’s BID

Do you own property, run a business or organization, or reside within the green sections of this map? You're invited to join us for a public meeting to discuss the formation of a Business Improvement District (BID) for the East 125th Street area.

The BID would be the first for East Harlem, which is currently the only community district in Manhattan without one. A BID will help us make a positive impact on our community – addressing issues including cleanliness, beautification and public safety.

This meeting is the second of two, and is set for Tuesday, February 27, at 10 a.m., at the Caribbean Cultural Center. A Zoom link will also be made available for those who register in advance. Sign up here to attend a public meeting.
