Renting a Brownstone

+ As Seen In Harlem

By the centennial year 1876, Madison Avenue had been pushed through Harlem and now formed the eastern boundary of Mount Morris Park.

An ad for renting a brownstone in 1876 had this copy:

"A three story brown stone front high stoop House, in good order; between Madison and 5th avs; excellent neighborhood, pleasant location in Harlem and convenient to boats, horse and steam cars; unfurnished; rent $850. Apply to occupant, on the premises."
