+ Swing into Fall
Save the date! Wednesday, September 11th. 7:00 PM at 2306 3rd Avenue.
HNBA is moving to a new meeting day. We’re going to try meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month for the 2024/25 season.
At our next meeting, on Wednesday, September 11th, we’ll have a representative from the CitiBikes for Students group that is advocating for low-cost CitiBike memberships for New York City Students.
We’ll also have a representative from Open Plans, a group that is looking at traffic issues near Marcus Garvey Park and finding ways to keep seniors, families, and everyone safer.
Swing Into Fall
Head on over to the Museum of the City of New York for a super swing night of dancing, food, and film:
When: Friday, September 6, 2024, 6:30pm
Join us for an outdoor screening of The Savoy King: Chick Webb & the Music That Changed America (Jeff Kaufman, 2012, 90 min), preceded by a performance by The Harlem Swing Dance Society and a panel with producer Voza Rivers and friends. Small bites will be available for purchase from Charles Pan-Fried Chicken!
The Savoy King tells the story of pioneering drummer and bandleader Chick Webb, known for his work leading the band at The Savoy Ballroom, a legendary Harlem venue. The Savoy Ballroom was the home of the amazing Lindy Hop dancers, and the first racially integrated club in the U.S. The Savoy Ballroom and Webb himself were instrumental in the jazz music scene of the 1930s. Webb fostered strong connections with nearly all the iconic musicians of that time, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Artie Shaw, Ella Fitzgerald, and more. This film honors his impact and celebrates the music of this era.
