No one expects New York City school lunches to be fine dining, and true to expectations, inspectors over the past year have found flies, roaches, and even signs of mice in school cafeterias across the city. One factoid from a recent report by Gothamist on this issue that stood out from the expected, was the public school vs. private school rate of violations.

While public schools weren't immune, private schools actually fared worse, averaging twice the critical violations.

So, is the food safe? Experts say isolated violations aren't cause for immediate alarm, but repeat offenders with pest problems raise the risk of foodborne illness. And let's face it, who wants to enjoy their "mushy green beans" with a side of flies?
