Sendero Verde Grows in East Harlem
+ Harlem Under the Viaduct
The City has a report out about Sendero Verde, a colossal 709-unit residential complex in East Harlem. Completed in April 2023, the development boasts the distinction of being the largest certified passive house building in the United States. By prioritizing energy efficiency and resident well-being, Sendero Verde offers a compelling blueprint for addressing both the housing and climate crises.
The building's passive house design, characterized by exceptional insulation, airtight construction, and advanced ventilation systems, drastically reduces energy consumption. This translates to lower utility bills for residents, a significant benefit for those in low-income communities often burdened by high housing costs. Moreover, the building's airtight envelope contributes to improved indoor air quality, a critical factor in the health and well-being of its occupants.
Beyond its environmental impact, Sendero Verde is a testament to the power of community-focused development. The complex incorporates a range of amenities, including community gardens, a fitness center, and spaces for social services, fostering a sense of belonging among residents. By providing access to essential resources and opportunities, Sendero Verde aims to uplift the entire neighborhood.
As cities grapple with the challenges of climate change and affordable housing, Sendero Verde offers a promising path forward. Its success demonstrates that sustainable, high-quality housing is attainable and can be replicated in other communities. By prioritizing energy efficiency, resident well-being, and community engagement, this project sets a new standard for affordable housing development.
Welcome to Harlem, Under the Viaduct
Under the old viaduct at 125th and 12th Avenue, a mural welcomes passengers to Harlem just before they cross the entrance to the St. Clair Stairs and the white stucco of the Cotton Club. Painted by Voltaire in 2023, it commemorates 50 years of hip-hop and is a project of the Harlem Public Arts Project
