Sleighing

+ New York's Arabic Speakers

Sleighing was a means of public transportation in the 19th century with transportation companies swapping out wheels for runners.

The image below shows a team pulling riders towards Bowling Green in 1860:

However, up in Harlem, sleighing was much more a pastime for the wealthy, leisure class. In the engraving below, teams of horses speed along a Harlem street in on a somber day:

Note that the homes have porches:

Perhaps a fanciful, artistic detail, or a clear reference to the architecture of the time, most clearly expressed on Astor Row:

New York’s Arabic Speakers

People with limited English proficiency and who speak Arabic, are fairly scattered throughout New York City. Manhattan is really the only borough without much of a concentration:
