The Subway is Complete

+ The Best Gym In Harlem is in MGP

In 1904, the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) subway is complete and for 5 cents, you could travel from City Hall to Harlem's 148th Street station.

This line, which we now know as the "3" (with an adjusted and extended route) had trains running at 40 miles per hour and carried 600,000 passengers a day.

The Best Gym In Harlem Is In Marcus Garvey Park

On April 12, 2022, officials from the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation confiscated equipment used in Marcus Garvey Park’s Lion’s Den. While every month it seemed, the workout gear was improving and being added to, the members used and stored their equipment without permits or the proper insurance—very costly barriers.

Before the parks department showed up to remove the Lion’s Den’s equipment in mid-April, however, the agency had begun taking a harder line, it seems, and regulating by the book, rather than making decisions based on what locals said they really needed.

After much controversy, the Lion’s Den now stores its gear in a container provided by the parks department. It’s one of several ways the group is becoming more official and filling a need when the cost of a gym membership at places near Marcus Garvey Park ranges from $15 to $75 per month, which impacts someone earning the area’s median income of $40,000.
