Tito Puente

+ The Duke Across the Street

The Museum of the City of New York is currently displaying a plan for a tribute to Tito Puente that would be located across from the Duke Ellington sculpture - at 110th and 5th Avenue.

Tito Puente (1923 - 2000) was an American musician, composer, bandleader, and ambassador to Latin American music throughout the last half of the 20th century.

He was a leading figure in Latin jazz and is considered the "King of Mambo" for his mambo dance hits in the 1950s. He was also known as "The Musical Pope", "El Rey de los Timbales" (The King of the Timbalis), and "The King of Latin Music".

Puente was born in Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican immigrants.

He started playing drums at age 15 with Federico Pagani's Happy Boys. He learned about Cuban music from the Happy Boys' timbalero, Josè Montesino.

In 1948, Puente formed the Tito Puente Orchestra. He released his best-selling album, Dance Mania, in 1958.

Puente's albums include:

  • My Fair Lady Goes Latin (2020)

  • Tito Puente "Live" Treasures Vol. (2020)

  • Tito Puente "Live" Treasures Vol.2 (2020)

  • Tito Puente "Live" Treasures (2020)

  • 2En1 (2017)

  • Mr. Estilo (2013)

  • Latin Cool Classics (2007)

Puente died on June 1, 2000, just months after receiving his fifth Grammy award.
