Hear Manhattan Borough President Candidates on Environmental Issues

Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22, is Earth Day!

All of the candidates running in the June 24th primary election to be Manhattan Borough President have been invited to talk about why they are the best candidate for the office and how they will tackle environmental racism in the Harlem community.

Go to find out what a New York City Borough President can do about this issue on Saturday, May 3rd from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM, at the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, located at 454 West 155th Street.

The event is organized by WeACT for Environmental Justice which was founded in Harlem in 1988. It is a community-based organization fighting to build healthy communities by ensuring that people of modest income and people of color participate meaningfully in the creation of sound and fair environmental policies and practices.

There will also be an opportunity to ask the candidates questions. The borough president consults with the Mayor on the annual budget, provides grants to local organizations, and advises on rezoning.

Are you concerned about toxic chemicals in cosmetics and other personal care products? Did you know that many of the most toxic products are aggressively marketed towards people of color?

The Beauty Justice Act in the New York State Assembly and Senate (S.2057/A.2054) proposes to regulate these products more aggressively: The bill states that: “Thousands of chemicals are used in cosmetics and personal care products. Some of these chemicals are associated with asthma, allergies, hormone disruption, neurodevelopmental problems, infertility, even cancer. Exposure to personal care and cosmetic products typically begins in infancy, with products such as baby shampoo, lotion, and diaper cream, and continues throughout their lifespan. According to the Environmental Working Group, ‘on average, women use 12 personal care products a day, exposing themselves to 168 chemical ingredients. Men use six, exposing themselves to 85 unique chemicals.’” (Sponsors include Harlem State Senator Cordell Cleare.)

Do you want to do something about this? Travel to Albany with WE ACT on Tuesday, April 29th to lobby for the passage of the New York State Beauty Justice Act.
