+ Church of the Holy Rosary Building Might Be Demolished

The Church of the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary building is slated for demolition. See article below.

Yusef Salaam Has Two More Town Halls Scheduled This Spring

Harlem’s City Council member Yusef Salaam has been hosting a series of town halls across District 9. There are two more upcoming, including one this week on Wednesday, May 14 at the Renaissance, 130 Malcolm X Boulevard, from 6-8pm. You must bring a valid government ID for entrance.

Salaam says this is your chance to hear directly from city agencies about the issues that matter—housing, public safety, sanitation, and more.

The last one will be on May 21 at Touro College, 231 West 124th, 6-8 PM

The site of the Church of the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary may be demolished.

Also on Wednesday, Community Board 11 will discuss the potential demolition of 442 and 444 East 119th Street between 1st and Pleasant Avenues, home of the Church of the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary since 1884. The building fell into disrepair and it was deconsecrated on June 30, 2017.

Over time, the congregation had shifted: from Irish and German to mostly Puerto Rican and other Latin Americans in keeping with the changing neighborhood. In its last years, the once stately interior was in such a poor state that services were held in the basement.

The building has been bought by a developer who is looking to tear it down. Go to the meeting of the Land Use, Landmarks & Planning Committee of Community Board 11 at 1664 Park Avenue, May 14, 6:30 pm if you have an interest in what should be done with the building and site. Wikipedia has a nice article about the church and its history. (ER)
