The Strangest Collaborative Efforts, Ever
+ Brownstone Bay
Here is how you can stump people who pride themselves in their knowledge of Harlem or New York City trivia. Ask them, what links the following people together:
Donald Trump
Yoko Ono
Patrick Ewing
Rupert Murdoch
Patti LaBelle
The answer lies with this woman, Mother Clara Hale:
whose sculpture on West 122nd Street, celebrates her work with Harlem’s children and infants.
Donald Trump, Yoko Ono, Patrick Ewing, Rupert Murdoch, and Patti LaBelle all donated to the Mother Hale sculpture, pictured above.
Clara McBride, born in 1905 in North Carolina and raised in Pennsylvania, faced challenges after her husband's death, struggling to support her three children. To make ends meet, she worked as a janitor and house cleaner. Later, she retired to spend time with her children and opened a home daycare, eventually becoming a foster mother.
In 1969, at 65, Clara began caring for babies addicted to heroin, leading to the establishment of Hale House. Over the years, she helped over 1,000 drug-addicted babies, providing love and finding adoptive families. Clara's work extended beyond caregiving, with programs for troubled youth, parental support, and research on addiction issues.
Clara Hale passed away in 1992, leaving a legacy continued by her daughter, Dr. Lorraine Hale. Unfortunately, after her death, the Hale House faced financial mismanagement allegations. Clara's motivation stemmed from her values in education and faith.

A unique bay window, created after the stoop of this brownstone was sheered off, and located where the main entry door would have been.
