Before The Bronx and Manhattan amalgamated to form New York City, crossing the Harlem River meant entering Westchester County:
As you can see from the detail on this map of 1865, The Bronx was Westchester.
(The map itself was intended to illustrate the rivers, creeks, and marshes of Manhattan.)
