Visit Hart Island, Starting Today

+ Do You Remember the 2003 Blackout?

Starting today, Hart Island (New York City’s potters’ field) will be open to all.

Hart Island is located in the Long Island Sound near City Island in the Bronx. Since 1869, the island has been used as a site for public burials, and is the final resting place for more than a million souls. The island is jointly operated by NYC Parks and the NYC Department of Social Services.

NYC Parks’ Urban Park Rangers will begin offering free tours to the general public and allow you to explore portions of the island and learn about its past - a critical (if macabre) site of City burials

Visit the City’s Hart Island page for more information on visiting the island and finding a loved one.

Do You Remember the 2003 NYC Blackout?

A British film company is doing a documentary on the 2003 NYC Blackout and want to hear from you if you have memories of this event:

Hello,

I'm Maeve, a documentary film producer at Ventureland in London. I'm working with 140 films to produce a beautiful feature documentary film about the 2003 Blackout in New York. I'm reaching out to New Yorkers who may have stories to tell from that time. I would so appreciate it if you could put out this message to your network. I would be honoured to hear any stories from that evening.

Kindest regards,

Maeve
